my mother said
let me know when you get home

my mother said
do you want me to call the doctor for you?

my mother said
i bet you were the cutest one there

my mother said
get some rest

my mother said

i miss my mommy

and suddenly
the world feels too heavy
for both of us

but i am holding my son
who believes
i am that person

and i realize
we never grow out of it

we just become
the mothers

while still waiting
for someone
to take care of us

and so i say

it’s okay
i’m here
you are safe
you are loved
